Here is an early beta-test version of ZONK
- compiled especially for readers of STEN
(the ST ENthusiasts diskzine).
PURPOSE OF ZONK
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Zonk's aim is simple... Fire it up
when you're too zonked to do anything but
"just sit there and stare" (Dylan quote
#1).
WHAT ZONK DOES
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
It draws psychedelic patterns. There are
no menus, no user parameters to input
and no sound samples. Provide your own
sounds, man!
WHAT DO I NEED TO RUN IT?
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
An Atari STM, STFM, STE, Mega ST(E) or TT,
running through a colour TV or monitor.
The more memory it has, the better. It'll
run fine with 512K memory but it
configures itself to use all memory
available to store grabbed screens. The
number of screens ranges from 2 (512K) to
116 (4 Mbytes).
IS THAT ALL?
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Not quite. Zonk is still in its infancy.
Right now, it can hold up to 116 screens
in memory. These are currently used as
backgrounds for new patterns and are also
shown in a fast slideshow.
Future versions will allow each of these
screens to be saved in any palette and with
any superimposed bit-plane pattern. Over
100000 variations will be possible.

Background Technical Info
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Zonk grew out of Kozmic, my shareware
psychedelic screen generator.
(Available for a £5.00 registration fee
from: Dave Henniker, 199, Bruntsfield
Place, Edinburgh, EH10 4DQ.)
Kozmic 2½ is the latest version and has
numerous menus and help-screens with which
you can design your own patterns. These
can then be saved to disk along with
information about colour-cycling, palette-
cycling, duration etc.
Kozmik 2½'s built-in slideshow can be used
to view the screens, or you can edit
them in a paint program. There are too many
options and features to mention here.
New versions of Kozmic will use many of
the ideas which have been developed during
work on Zonk.
Zonk was written in STOS basic with the
extra benefit of the MISTY extension. It was
compiled, fixed for TOS versions > 1.62
using STOSFX11.PRG, and finally packed with
FIREPACK.PRG.
CAVEATS
=======
*** WARNING! ***
PHOTOSENSITIVE EPILEPTICS SHOULD NOT USE
ZONK!
The flickering effect in some screens may
induce fits.
Many sources of artificial light flicker
imperceptibly, eg fluorescent lights and
computer screens. Some people suffer
headaches as a result of working under
these conditions.
The Atari ST (even with a static screen)
flickers at 50Hz/60Hz on a colour monitor
or 70Hz on a mono monitor. A European TV
flickers at 25Hz due to the interlaced
rasters. EC guidelines recommend that
the flicker (screen refresh rate) should be
at least 70Hz.
Please note: I take no responsibility for
the state of your head. If your eyeballs
end up dangling from your optic nerves then
that's not my fault.
Neither can I accept any blame for the
state of your monitor. If your flyback
transformer goes up in smoke or your scart
plug falls out then that's just too bad.
Dave Henniker - January 1993
